Did you know that November 4th to 9th is Manitoba Falls Prevention Week for Older Adults? Here are some statistics about falls.
- One in three Canadians age sixty-five and older fall at least once per year.
- Falls account for more than half of all injuries for Canadians age sixty-five years and older.
- Falls account for 85% of seniors’ injury related hospitalizations, making this the leading cause of injuries to seniors.
- 40% of seniors’ falls result in hip fractures.
The good news is that most falls are preventable. Regular exercise makes you stronger and helps improve balance and coordination, wearing proper footwear indoors and outdoors is essential, turning on lights or using nightlights help you see better in the dark, and keeping your floors dry and free of obstacles are all small ways to help prevent falls. Come to the presentation on November 6th to learn more.
In honour of Falls Prevention Week, Jenna Houssin, a physiotherapist from Charleswood Physiotherapy will be at The Parkway to discuss who is at risk of falls, why falls occur and strategies for falls prevention. Join us on Wednesday November 6th at 1:00 pm in the multi-purpose room.
This is a very important topic so we hope to see many people there!
